Online Shopping Protection Tips

Online shopping protection education is a crucial public service that needs to be rendered due to the popularity of online gift shopping. You can't deny the fact that the web has made gift shopping so much better. You can shop from the comfort of your home any hour of the day. You bypass the driving in traffic, the long lines in the stores, and the smart- mouthed cashiers. You can get great deals at the click of a button and everything you buy is mailed to you. Man, talk about easy living!! Although the world wide web seems to be the answer to almost all our gift-shopping distresses there are still some things you need to know to protect yourself while shopping online. So before you go surfing for that fabulous crock pot for you mom read these safety precautions that will keep you safe while shopping online.

Legitimacy: Online shopping protection requires you to evaluate the site you are on to be sure it is secure and legitimate. You can do this by searching for the business in the Better Business Burea at www.bbb.org. You can also call the customer service number and ask the representative questions about the history of the business and get answers about your concerns. Evaluate the customer service you receive and gauge whether the business meets your professional standards. Never shop on a sites that do not have a contact number!!!!

Credit not Debit: If you can avoid using your debit card to make your purchase then by all means don't use it. Simply because any discrepancy that may come after your final purchase can be easily corrected and less damaging on your credit card. Since debit cards are a direct source to your bank account any charge mistake on the retailer's part could smear your finances and interfere with your account credibility. With credit cards you can dispute a charge and it can easily be corrected with less burden and influence on your personal finances.

Be Cautious of Emails: Links to stores through your email can easily be scams. In order to protect yourself online, instead of going to the site through your email link go directly to the site by using its url and evaluate what you find there.

Return Policy: Before the final checkout of your gift(s) look over the site's return policy and see if your comfortable with it. Make sure the store actually allows returns and exchanges on items and what the procedure is for receiving your money back if necessary. This info will come in handy if your gift is not what you thought it would be.(pictures on the internet can be a little deceiving sometimes)

Confirmation: Online shopping protection dictates that you print out a receipt of all your purchases. Always, Always, Always!! If you can't print out the receipt write down the confirmation # and store it in a safe place just in case you may need to use it.

Security: Make sure the site is secure before putting in any of your personal information. Look for https: in the front of the url and look for the padlock icon at the bottom window browser to be sure that the site is secure. However if you feel that the site is suspicious don't shop there.

Use gift cards: Put money on prepaid cards (like visa or master cards) and shop with them online if you don't feel comfortable using your credit/debit card.

Search for feedback: Search for the site or product online through search engines and read testimonies from people who have shopped at that store and have used the product before to see if it can be trusted.

Check your Statement: Active online shopping protection is necessary even after you have finished shopping. Two or three days after making purchases check to see if your charges have correctly been documented on your credit/debit card statement. If you find any discrepancy ,dispute the charge as soon as possible, and keep in contact with your card company until it has been successfully cleared.

Get identity protection: Buy some identity protection so just in case you do fall into the hands of a scammer your credit and identity will be protected. It is well worth it.

Read the fine print: This may seem a little burdensome but form a habit of reading the terms and conditions of your transactions. Online shopping protection require you to make conscious efforts to keep yourself safe. If that means spending a little time reading the fine print, do it. At least there won't be any surprises coming your way after you've made your final purchase.

FYI: Make it a habit of reviewing all your financial statements frequently. You don't have to wait for your account statements to come in the mail at the end of the month. Get access to all your accounts online and check you purchasing activity as least 3 times a month. That way if there is a mistake it can be detected and corrected as soon as possible.
